Abstract (EN)
Aim: We aimed in this experimental study to investigate for potentially harmful effectsof formaldehyde exposure during pregnancy on the development of fetuses and livermorphology and to determine possible protective effect of chrysin to the harmful effects.Material and Methods: 67 adult Wistar Albino genus male rats whose weights arebetween 200-250 gram were used in this study. 67 female rats were divided into 7groups and attempted to create pregnancy. 12 non-pregnant rats were excluded from thestudy. We injected physiological saline to group I intraperitoneally (i.p.), 20 mg/kgchrysin (CH) to group II by gavage, 0,1 mg/kg formaldehyde (FA) to group III i.p., 1mg/kg FA to group IV i.p., 0,1 mg/kg FA i.p. and 20 mg/kg CH by gavage to group V,1 mg/kg FA i.p. and 20 mg/kg CH by gavage to group VI and corn oil to group VII bygavage between 7th and 20th day of pregnancy every other day. Fetuses were removed bycesarean section on 20th day of pregnancy. Morphological parameters (fetal weight andfetal liver weight) of fetuses examined. Histological staining and biochemical analyzeswere performed to determine the development of the liver are affected or not.Findings: Statistically significant decrease was found in liver weight and fetal weight inthe group treated with FA. Statistically significant decrease was found onmegakaryocyte number in the group treated with FA 0,1 and FA 1. Histopathologicalchanges were observed in the group treated with FA 1. FA biochemically reduced thelevel of glutathione (GSH) and augmented the level of malondialdehyde(MDA).Results: Exposure to low doses of formaldehyde during pregnancy causing oxidativestress in the fetus and causes morphological, histological and biochemical negativeeffects.
