Determining oxidative stress in babies and mothers with low birth week of pregnancy to assess the oxidative stress of thyol disulfide homeostasis and intercellular glutation

Abstract (EN)

According to a gestational week, low birth weight (SGA) is a health problem with a significant prevalence worldwide and in our country. SGA caused by pregnancy complications, environmental factors, or maternal factors leads to an increased risk of mortality and morbidity for both mothers and newborns. Oxidative stress is involved in many disease mechanisms as well as in pregnancy-related health problems. In this context, it was aimed to determine the levels of thiol-disulfide homeostasis and intracellular glutathione in babies diagnosed with SGA and their mothers to evaluate oxidative stress with broad oxidative stress parameters. We evaluated oxidative stress in both mothers and newborns in 32 healthy control groups (AGA) and 43 SGA groups included in our study. Extra erythrocytic thiol disulphide homeostasis showed the same oxidative pattern in the SGA mother and SGA infant groups and disulfide levels were found to be high, native and total thiol levels were found to be low. Among the serum parameters supporting these findings, oxidative MPO activity was high antioxidant catalase and ferroxidase activities were found to be low. Intraerythrocytic thiol disulphide homeostasis showed an oxidative pattern in both mothers and infants in the SGA group. According to our study results, oxidative stress on the maternal side was more dominant and affected all parameters in SGA pathology, while on the newborn side was found to be more moderate than mothers. In SGA newborns, oxidative stress was more dominant in intra and extraerythrocytic thiol disulphide homeostasis and myeloperoxidase activity. It has been observed that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathology of SGA. However, further studies are required to fully elucidate the mechanism and find out where oxidative stress is caused
