Problems that Syrians under temporary protection face during the integration process: The case of Kocaeli

Due to the resulting internal turmoil in Syria in 2011, Syrian individuals before immigrated to the camps in Turkey, after the confusion in the country transformed into a civil war, millions has immigrated to many regions in Turkey because of the compelling reasons. The understanding of the Turkish society from the Syrian refugees who comes to Turkey and that society's traditions, customs and social life and the important way to integrate with their cultural heritage is to ensure the integration process to be soundly executed. It is seen that Syrian refugee have problems with interacting with the host society and in language speaking, education and training, social cohesion, law, employment and cultural integration. In this study, Kocaeli was taken as a sample. Within the scope of qualitative research, in the Kocaeli sample, the interviews were conducted in the districts where Syrians intensively live and the beneficiaries of the Turkish Red Crescent Kocaeli Community Centre, with 41 adults using the in-depth interview technique. The data obtained in the interview are divided into themes with the MAXQDA 2019 qualitative data analysis program. The study handled within the framework of these themes was analysed. According to the data obtained as a result of the study, it has been determined that Syrians under temporary protection have problems in the fields of social, cultural, language, education and employment throughout the integration process. Due to the fact that Syrians under temporary protection do not speak Turkish, the problems they face in the field of social-cultural, education and employment prevent the integration process and cause segregation in the society.
