The role of Turkish Red Crescent in social cohesion of Syrians under temporary protection: The case of Ankara and Mardin community centers

In 2011, due to political turmoil caused by the civil war in Syria, and Turkey's open-door policy so began the migration of Syrians in Turkey. NGOs have become important forces serving in the field in terms of providing support to the public at the point of providing service to approximately 4 million Syrians in the Six of Temporary Protection and completing the deficiencies. Even though a process of about 10 years is mentioned, the problems in the social adaptation of Syrians are an indication that the service provided in the field should be improved. The fact that social work interventions that progress based on skills are at a point that can be said to be far from occupational approaches indicates that studies should be increased towards the conceptual background of the service provided in the field of migration in the social work perspective. This study aims to reveal the social service practices provided to Syrians by non-governmental organizations in the Turkish Red Crescent Community Center in the social adaptation of Syrians under temporary protection and to evaluate them based on social service. In this study, the samples of Ankara and Mardin Turkish Red Crescent Community Centers were taken. Interviews were conducted with 19 community center employees using an in-depth interview technique with professionals working with Syrian refugees at the community center. The data obtained from the interviews were coded with the MAXQDA 2020 qualitative data analysis program, categorized, and then divided into themes. In light of these themes, the community center, professionals, and the adaptation problems experienced were evaluated in the context of social service. According to the results of the study, the services stuck to Syrian refugees in the Turkish Red Crescent Community Center, the importance and characteristics of the community center, its versatility in ensuring social cohesion, and the problems experienced by professionals due to individual, institutional, and public reasons while providing services have been revealed.
