The family in the dilemma of tradition and modernity: Example of Kutahya

Society is constantly changing and becoming a dynamic entity. The family, which is the most fundamental unit of society, is also affected by this change and transformation process. In terms of human history, the last two centuries have been described as the period of rapid social change. Industrialization in this period, migration from village to city, urbanization, technological developments, women's business life disposal, social media factors such as family structure, types, functions, etc. it affects. The aim of our study is to understand the direction of this effect. This is an area study of a family model that is neither fully capable of carrying traditional family codes nor fully integrated into modern life, that is, a family that remains in the dilemma of tradition and modernisation. Our study consists of three main sections. The subject, purpose and importance of the research are included in the introduction section. In the first part of our study, conceptual framework; sociologically family, family types, family functions, theoretical approaches to family and historical development of family are explained. The second section deals with the structure and evolution of the family in Turkey. In this section, first of all, family is examined in the traditional way of life. In the following, the change and transformation of the family in the context of modernity is explained and the sources of the transformation to the modern family are discussed. In the third part of the field research, the methodology of the research was explained, the survey data were evaluated in the light of the conceptual framework of the study and the findings were interpreted. In our study, the questionnaire was used as a data collection tool by scanning related studies and written sources. Our questionnaireswere filled by 180 people who were selected randomlyand determined through voluntary basis among the residents in the province of Kutahya. Collected data from SPSS (Statistical Packag for the Social Sciences)it was evaluated in the light of the theoretical framework of the study.
