The idea of minimized living is not a new trend, but it is becoming more significant in today's society. Changes in lifestyle and population rise have had a substantial effect on living spaces and environments. Gary Hustwit's documentary Urbanized (2011), shows that more than half of the world's people now live in cities and urban centers, and that this trend is likely to continue. The need for small housing rises. Rural houses are scarcer than ever, with limited space and difficult development sites being the normal. This thesis is motivated by the challenges posed by minimal and tiny living spaces and the resulting adaptable design solutions. It examines Japan as a case study, concentrating on traditional Japanese design elements and how they are interpreted for contemporary urban life, as well as the global impact of Japanese design. The early emphasis is on the concept of a compact metropolis, and Japan is used as an example of a densely populated metropolitan center. The geographical circumstances of Japan, being surrounded by sea and having a limited land area, as well as the religion and culture of the Japanese people with their traditional traits have influenced the Japanese worldview along with the way of life and contributed to the adoption of the minimalist lifestyle. The characteristics of the traditional Japanese home and its associated practices are central to this research. It addresses how the conventional application of human size and proportion has affected the spatial arrangement. At the same time, the important relationship between the elements and the house was found, and the materials and building methods used by the native Japanese were evaluated. The research then turns its emphasis to consider the impact these historic variants have on contemporary designs. Urban places with a high population density often have modern interpretations of these historic qualities. The emphasis of this thesis is on three case studies in Japan which are House in Kobe, R-Torso-C, Garden and House. After establishing the relevance of these designs, the study examines the impact of Japanese design on tiny houses. The last chapter of the study tries to find out the effects and reflections of traditional design solutions of Japanese houses on modern micro houses.
