Form grammar research on traditional Prizren houses

Prizren is a historical and cultural city in Kosovo. Located at the foot of the Šar Mountains, the city is surrounded by mountains on three sides and is close to the Albanian border. An important district center during the Ottoman period, Prizren is one of the places in the Balkans where Ottoman influence was strongly felt. Prizren is also a multi-religious and tolerant city. Different ethnic groups such as Turks, Albanians, Serbs and Bosniaks live together here. Known as the cultural capital of Kosovo, Prizren has significant potential for sustainable cultural tourism with its mosques, churches, bridges and examples of civil architecture. Within the scope of this thesis study, 17 houses were selected in the historical city center of Prizren to extract the typologies of Prizren houses, which are one of the determining elements of Prizren city identity, and their analyses were made through shape grammar method, rule sets were obtained and new plan schemes derived from this architectural language were produced. It is aimed to ensure the sustainability of the architectural identity in the historical city center by making designs within the context of these rule sets determined in both additions to be made to the historical texture in the future and new housing constructions.
