Clinical evaluation of low-shrinkage composites applied to class ii restorations in young permanent molars

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical success of low-shrink composite restoratives applied to class II cavities in young permanent molar teeth frequently treated in pediatric dentistry clinics according to United States Public Health Services (USPHS) Criteria.Class II cavities of 111 young permanent molar teeth in 86 children in mixed dentition aged 7-13 were restored by one operator according to the manufacturer?s instructions with a microhybrid composite Filtek Z 250, a ring-opening composite Filtek Silorane, a nano-filler composite Grandio, a condensable composite SureFil, an ormocer based micro hybrid composite resin Admira. One hundred six restorations were evaluated until end of the study. Digital periapical radiographs were obtained before and after the restoration and at a recall appointment. Clinical examination of the restorations was performed by two independent examiners in 6 and 12 months according to USPHS criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson Chi-Square and McNemar tests.None of the cases demonstrated secondary caries, discrepancy in anatomical form, surface roughening and discoloration. Marginal discoloration in 20 % of Z 250 group, 4,3 % of Silorane group, 4,5 % of Grandio group, 14,3 % of SureFil group, 15 % of Admira group (p=0,215); marginal discrepancy in 5 % of Admira group (p=0,362); postoperative sensitivity in 4,3 % of Silorane group, 4,5 % of Grandio group, and 4,8 % of SureFil group was observed.According to these results, low-shrink composites showed good clinically successful in restoration of young permanent molars during the 1 year evaluation and more long-term clinical studies are needed to evaluate clinical performance of these materials.Key words: Composite, polymerization shrinkage, ormocer, silorane, United States Public Health Services (USPHS) Criteria.
