The examination of foreign language learning anxiety levels of young adult learners in terms of various variables

In this study, the anxiety experienced by young adult learners while learning Turkish as a foreign language in the classroom was examined in terms of age, gender, nationality, mother tongue, English level, preparatory class level, and past Turkish experiences. In the research, the descriptive method was used in quantitative research methods. The quantitative research method is a research method that can measure people's behavior through experimentation, observation, and testing, and can explain phenomena with numerical data without the comments of individuals (Bedir Erişti, 2013, p.9). The population of the research consists of the preparatory class students of the Turkish language teaching center of a university in the Western Black Sea Region, who are learning Turkish as a foreign language. The data of the research; It was obtained by the foreign language class anxiety scale (FLACS), developed by Horwitz et al. (1986) and adapted to Turkish by Fatma (2011) Gürsu, and the demographic information form prepared by the researcher. T-test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U statistical methods were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study showed that young adults have a moderate level of foreign language anxiety. It was observed that the foreign language anxiety of young adults and the variables of gender, age, English level, and their preparatory class level did not make a significant difference. Finally, it was observed that there was a low negative significant difference between the past Turkish language experience variable and the level of foreign language anxiety. It is seen that young adults who have Turkish language experience before starting the course have slightly higher anxiety than those who do not. The results reached at the end of the study were discussed in the light of similar recent studies and various recommendations based on these results were included.
