Evaluation of the effects of rectal ozone applications on post-anesthetic blood gas parameters in cats under general anesthesia

Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to reveal the effects of rectal ozone application on possible blood gas changes resulting from anesthesia. In the study, material consisted of a total of 16 owned cats between the ages of 1-6 years. The cats constituting the study were evaluated in two separate groups as the study group (U; n= 8) and the control group (C; n= 8). Biochemical and hemogram examinations belong to patients were performed before sterilization or castration. After the general examinations of the cats in the C were performed 3 days before receiving general anesthesia, air insufflation was performed with a rectal probe (3 mL/kg). The animals in the U were treated with 50 μg/mL, 3mL/kg O2-ozone for 3 days before receiving general anesthesia and resuscitation of ozone within 1 minute by rectal route. According to hemogram, biochemistry and blood gas test results after rectal ozone applications, it was determined that the pre- and postoperative measurement results remained within the reference limits and no statistically significant difference was obtained, except PCO2 blood gase value. However, the calculated and normal PCO2 values were found to be within the reference limits. Besides, it was determined to be statistically significant on t test that performed based on the repeated measurement values and Roc analysis (p<0.05). In the U, it was observed that PCO2 levels significantly increased especially before the operation compared to the 3rd day after rectal ozone administration (p<0.05). The AUC values for Calc. PCO2 and PCO2 values evaluated preoperatively were 0.836 and 0.813, respectively (p<005). In conclusion, it was determined that rectal ozone applications did not have any negative effects on blood gas parameters. However, PCO2 pressure values were found to be higher in the C than in the U, although they remained within the reference limits. In the follow-up measurements, PCO2 pressure was found to be higher in the U than in the C, with a decrease in erythrocyte markers. In the presented study, the limitation of this increase suggests that rectal ozone administration may be beneficial in terms of limiting hypercapnia. Keywords: Blood gas, Cat, Ozon, Rectal
