Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of spiramycin therapy in combination with full mouth scaling and root planning (FMSRP) on clinical periodontal parameters in individuals with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP). Twenty-five systemically healthy patients with GAP, 20 to 37 years of age (mean 26±4.74), were included in the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups; the control group which received only FMSRP therapy and the SPİ group which received FMSRP therapy combined with spiramycin (FMSRP+Spiramycin). Probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque index (PI) values were measured at baseline, 1 and 3 months after treatment. No significant differences were found in clinical parameters at the baseline with the control group and SPİ group (p>0.05). PPD, CAL and GI values at first month and all clinical parameters except PI values at third month were significantly lower in the SPI group compared with control group (p<0.05). Within group assesments showed that the clinical parameters at third month for all 2 groups were significantly reduced compared with baseline values. In SPI group, GI and BOP were significantly lower and PI was significantly higher at third month compared to first month, while in control group, no significant differences were found between first and third month in all clinical parameters. The percentage of moderate PPD regions (4-6 mm) was lower and need for surgical treatment was decreased in SPİ group compared with control group. Our results show that spiramycin therapy in combination with FMSRP have additional clinical efficacy when compared FMSRP alone in GAP, as well as further studies are needed.
