Abstract (EN)
This research investigates the economic contributions of recycling activities and consumer awareness. The study covers a range of topics starting from the definition of recycling, classification of recyclable materials and recycling practices in Turkey and around the world. In particular, the recycling processes of different waste types such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, medical waste, organic waste and e-waste are examined in detail. Current recycling activities in Turkey are compared with practices in countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Japan and South Korea. Within the scope of the research, the economic contributions of recycling are also examined. Various economic impacts of recycling activities such as saving energy, supporting domestic production and creating employment are discussed. In addition, the economic dimensions of recycling activities are discussed in the light of concepts such as sustainable development, circular economy and transition to low carbon economy. The research includes a comprehensive literature review followed by a survey to better understand the environmental and economic benefits of recycling processes. The survey aims to assess the awareness levels of consumers about recycling and the effect of the change in awareness rates according to socio-economic criteria. The findings provide strategic recommendations for increasing recycling activities and improving recycling awareness in the society. As a result, when the data obtained from the participants of the research were evaluated, it was determined that the participants generally have knowledge and awareness about recycling. It has been determined that all participants have a common expectation for the increase of information on recycling and social participation. A positive and significant relationship was found between the awareness level of the participants in direct proportion to the increase in age and education level. Increasing consumer awareness plays a vital role in increasing recycling rates and making these processes more economically efficient.
