Determination of antioxidant capacities of some endemic species which spread in Alpine region of Giresun Mountains

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the antioxidant activities of MeOH extracts of Heracleum platytaenium Boiss. of the Apiaceae family, Digitalis lamarckii Ivanina of Scrophulariaceae family, and Geranium ibericum Cav. subsp. jubatum (Hand.-Mazz.) P.H.Davis of Geraniaceae family species naturally grown in the vicinity of Giresun-Eğribel passages were evaluted by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), free radical scavenging analyzes and the total phenolic compound quantities by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FCR) by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Soxhlet and maceration methods were used as extraction methods in the analyzes. The plants were separated from root, stem, leaf, flower and fruit parts and subjected to drying process. As a result of the analysis in all parts of the Heracleum platytaenium Boiss. plant, the lowest % inhibition values between 3 plants were measured. Geranium ibericum jubatum plant exhibited very high % inhibition values when the standard materials used were taken into consideration. When the plants analyzed in the thesis study are taken into account, Heracleum platytaenium Boiss. while the "flower" part of the plant were the highest values, Digitalis lamarckii Ivan. and "root" parts of Geranium ibericum jubatum plants were showed higher values than the other parts. The % inhibition values at different concentrations obtained as a result of DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activity analyzes were converted to SC50 values. It has been found that there are no significant differences between the results of analysis of extracts obtained with soxhlet and maceration extractions.
