Abstract (EN)

Among the studies on Tatar proverbs, Huciahmet Mehmütov's book entitled Tatar Halık İcatı (Mekaller hem Eytĭmner) (1987) is a major contribution with 17089 proverbs and idioms in it. There are items in this reference book that haven't been treated fairly yet. This thesis deals with the 315 proverbs on "Clothing", one of the themes that went unstudied. These proverbs on clothing were first transcribed to Turkey Turkish and examined in several respects. In the sections findings and discussion, these proverbs were sorted according to the following criteria: predicate type, predicate position, sentential mood, sentence structure, pragmatic function, sentential function and voice (active and passive). In addition, the proverbs were examined for parallelism and ellipsis, and each type was exemplified. For parallelism and ellipsis, we subscribed to Mac Coinnigh's (2015) criteria. While the sections on finding and discussion, which only include subsections of some predefined criteria present examples of proverbs that specific section, the section for transcription, interpretation and examination presents all the data for each proverb. The thesis aims to find out the tendency of Tatar proverbs with respect to the predefined criteria. It also aims to contribute to the field by providing new data and transcribe and interpret the the proverbs on clothing in the book Tatar Halık İcatı (Mekaller hem Eytĭmner) that have not ben transcribed or interpreted yet. As a result of this thesis which has the abovementioned aims, we found that Tatar proverbs tend to have verbal predicates, standard word order, positive polarity, simple sentence structure, co-ordinated sentences, declarative mood and active voice. With respect to parallelism and ellipsis, we found that out of 315 proverbs studied here 79 (25,07%) have parallelism and 18 (5,71%) have ellipsis. We hope that the thesis will contribute to the growing number of the Tatar proverbs that have been translated into Turkey Turkish, thus helping the researchers who will study Tatar proverbs.
