ABSTRACT COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF IMPACTED MAXILLARY CANINE LOCATION WITH PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPHY AND CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the success of panoramic radiograph and cone beam computed tomography in determining the localization of impacted maxillary canines. Materials and Methods: One hundered and twenty nine patients who underwent panoramic radiograph and cone beam computed tomography for various reasons were included in this study and 152 impacted maxillary canine teeth that met the study criteria were examined. On panoramic radiograph, a horizontal line was drawn from the mesiobuccal cusp tip of the right and left maxillary molars, and along the long axis of the impacted canines. The inclination of the canine as measured lateral to the midline was recorded in degrees. The accurate localization of impacted maxillary canines was identified on cone beam computed tomography. Results: There were 44 (%34,1) male and 85 (%65,9) female patients with a mean age was 33,8 ± 14,2 years (range: 18-75). No difference was found for intraobserver variability (0.957). The mean angulation of impacted canines in male patients was 45,6 ± 18,5 degrees (range: 14,6-89,6) and in female was 43,5 ± 19,9 degrees (range: 6,5-88) and the difference was not significant. (p = 0.523). Thirty eight (%25,0) of impacted teeth were located buccally and 114 (75.0%) were palatally. Twenty three (%17,8) patients had bilateral impacted maxillary canines, 106 (82.2%) had unilateral. The mean angulation of buccally impacted maxillary canines was 48,5±22,3 degrees, palatally impacted maxillary canines was 42.7±18.3 degrees. There was no statistically significant differences between the angulation and location (p=0,149). Conclusion: As a result, the angle values measured from panoramic imaging was not relieble for identifying the localization of impacted maxillary canines.
