Abstract (EN)

This work, titled "A Semiotic Adventure: Oscar Wilde in the Turkish Language through His Three Stories" analyses Wilde's three fairy-tale stories, titled The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend and The Nightingale and The Rose, from a semiotic point of view and in the context of the semiotics of translation. The work aims to introduce the semiotics of translation and its goals along with semiotics by presenting practical examples. The first chapter of the work, titled "The Sign and The Semiotics", is the theoretical framework. It summarises the theories of the three important names in semiotics, particularly in literary semiotics, Algirdas Julien Greimas, Roland Barthes and Jean-Claude Coquet, whose approaches shaped the method of analysis used in the practical part and also describes the sign, semiotics, and the semiotics of translation. The second chapter, titled "The Texts and The Practice", is the practical part. After being given brief information about Oscar Wilde and his age, the three stories are semiotically analysed here. The analyses have been applied to the original texts published in 1962 by Penguin Puffin Books. The Turkish translations by the seven different translators of one of these stories and the Turkish translations by the eight different translators of the other two have been evaluated according to the criteria of the semiotics of translation. The findings gained in accordance with "The Systematique of The Designificative Tendencies in Translation" developed by Sündüz Öztürk Kasar have been collectively displayed in the tables and expressed by numerical data. The work aims to illuminate both academic readers who are exploring semiotics and its role in translation and its helpfulness for translators in their works and general readers who are interested in semiotics and the semiotics of translation.
