Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to comparatively examine marital adjustment among married couples within the framework of the Gottman model and in relation to cultural context. Conducted using a qualitative design and a phenomenological approach, the study sample consists of 10 Turkish couples, five residing in Germany and five in Turkey. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews comprising 15 open-ended questions, administered both online and face-to-face. Content analysis revealed six main themes and 15 subthemes: knowing one another in marriage, sharing love and admiration, trust and fidelity, conflict management, family system and boundaries, and creating shared meaning. The findings indicate that forms of marriage have transformed in line with changing social norms, with "modern arranged marriages" becoming more prominent. While most couples expressed their love in various ways, expressions of appreciation and gratitude were found to be limited particularly among couples in Turkey. Although high levels of trust and fidelity were observed among participants, the importance of power sharing in conflict management was emphasized, with a lack of power sharing associated with increased frequency and intensity of conflicts. Additionally, boundaries with families of origin were found to significantly influence couple relationships. The transition to parenthood was associated with short-term relational challenges but increased long-term commitment. Finally, shared goals, emotional investments, and levels of commitment were identified as crucial factors for the continuity of harmonious relationships.
