Figurative language used in Giotto and Cimabue art

Like every branch of art, the effects of the period in which painting emerged are reflected as an artistic product. Artists were influenced by the social, cultural, economic, political status, traditional, artistic background and beliefs of the period and society in which they lived and created results that reflected that period. Artists such as Cimabue and Giotto provided the foundations of Italian painting by providing the foundation of Italian painting by transferring the renaissance in the Gothic period of Italy in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. While Cimabue continued the traditional Byzantine presence in art, he took the first steps towards abandoning the Byzantine style towards the end of the 13th century and Giotto followed him. Giotto brought a new style to art, and an advanced approach emerged that directed art towards a more human expression and nature. Although Giotto's regime did not have advanced schematic methods, the concentration of shapes in his products and the importance of perspective are considered the first steps in understanding two-dimensional art. This thesis aims to examine the figurative language in the works of Cimabue and Giotto and to reveal their influence on the period in which they lived and the history of painting through the styles and techniques of both artists. Cimabue's figurative language is expressed with religious themes and symbols, while the figures are stylized with straight lines and two dimensions; Giotto's figurative language reflects a more dynamic and natural expression in which human emotions come to the fore, the human body and anatomy are accurately reflected, there is a sense of three-dimensional depth, and light and perspective are used.The focus of the study is to express the meaning represented by the figurative languages that artists such as Cimabue and Giotto introduced into the art of painting by laying the foundations of the Italian painting art of the 13th century, and the similarities and differences of shape, color, composition and expression elements in their works of art. As a result, the figurative language in the works of Giotto and Cimabue caused significant changes in the history of art, and their works affected the cultural and social dynamics of the period. Therefore, they showed with their works how art and human perception evolved in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
