Abstract (EN)

Since its existence, human being who has the desire to understand and be understood have developed many communication tools. Thanks to the his senses, the human being, who touches the universe except himself, shares the information that he has acquired by using the same senses with others. With the development of vision, which is one of these senses, human existential communication effort has taken a form based on images. The human mind, equipped to think and communicate with symbols, has produced various visual and auditory indicators as a result of this communication purpose. It can be said that culture is formed when these symbols produced in society are meaningful to more than one person. In this context, design, which is a part of culture, has a form that developes by being influenced by both past generations and contemporary productions. But besides this , it may not always be true to think that design and art follow a linear path, and that the product produced first is archaic of the next. It is thought that the visual signs produced in a society, as one of the means of creating emotion in the individuals belonging to that culture, have an impact on the development of the graphic design approach. The connection that the designer will stablish with the culture is considered important both in terms of providing a wider area in terms of creating a richness of expression and in terms of the impressiveness of the message to be delivered to the recipient. In this thesis, the attitude developed by the sample countries in the context of their approach to illustration and their relationship with culture has been observed. In order to contribute to be development of graphic design in Turkey and have an active role in the international arena, the relationship between Turkish illustrations and culture has been examined. It is hoped that new approaches will be developed by increasing the effectiveness of Turkish illustrations (miniature), which are mostly examined under the title of traditional arts, in the context of graphic design. At this point, what is expected from the designer is to pave the way for and create new approaches by using of the experiences transferred from the past, rather than the repetition of the tradition. It is aimed that the Turkish illustrations, which are a part of culture, are not lost in the chain of indifference and not only preserve but also pav the way for future generations to create their own approaches by opening new paths with the knowledge transferred. Key Words: Cultural symbols, illustration, Turkish illustrations
