Determining the effectiveness of guided materials based on enriched 5e instructional model related to solar system and beyond: Space puzzle unit

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of guide materials based on 5E teaching model of constructivist learning theory relate to Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle Unit on 7th students? conceptual change, retention of concepts, students? achievement and learning environment. Semi-experimental research design was used in this study. Main application is carried out with 72 grade 7 students and 1 science and technology teacher in Trabzon Mimar Sinan Elementary School. Data are obtained with; Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle Unit Conceptual Understanding Test (SSBSPCUT), Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle Unit Achievement Test (SSBSPAT), Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle Unit Drawing Test (SSBSPDT), student and teacher interviews, semi-structured observations in the classroom. The qualitative data analyzed with descriptive analysis. The quantitative data analyzed with Independent t Test, Dependent t Test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Mann Whitney U and ANOVA. It was stated that students misconceptions relate to astronomy may result from language using in daily life, more or less generalization of concepts, textbooks, teachers, social media, television and so on. At the end of the study, it has seen that there is conceptual change relate to solar, stars, star shooting, solar system, universe, comet, meteor, stars invisibility during the day, place of our planet in universe, light year, constellations, astronomy unit and astronaut concepts in experiment group. It is determined that guided materials based on Enriched 5E Model made significant meaningful effect on students achievement compared with current instruction program (t(70)= 4,345; p<.05). It was found that; learning environment enriched with conceptual change text, analogies and posters provide the learning environment by having fun, permanent and meaningful learning. Some suggestions are given to the educators and researchers who work in the field of astronomy. Keywords: Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle, 5E Model, Guidance Material,Conceptual Change
