Abstract (EN)
The South Kazakhstan region has been the homeland of various Turkish tribes and states and one of the centers of civilization throughout history. Therefore, it is home to many historical-cultural heritages. Ancient cities such as Sayram, Otyrar and Turkistan are located in this province, as well as many holy places, burial places, mausoleums and tombs of saints. This thesis examines the mausoleums, tombs of saints, shrines and religious places located in Shymkent, South Kazakhstan (Turkestan Province) and their connections with the cult of ancestors. The field research method is used as the qualitative research method. We asked prepared questions to tomb keepers, tomb visitors and residents. Their answers are recorded with a voice recorder after obtaining their permission. Interview and observation data were compiled and materials from written sources were examined and interpreted. The ancestors, who have become the focus of worship in the Southern Kazakhstan region, are classified under four main groups, taking into account their identities, the rumors about them, the reasons for visiting their graves and the beliefs and practices around them: 1) Islamic ancestors; 2) Clan ancestors; 3) Profession ancestors; 4) Nature ancestors (associated with the elements).
