The research of the level of knowledge and ability of the students about ornaments in fine arts and sports high school violin textbooks

The purpose of this study is to search out the level of knowledge and ability of the students about ornaments in Fine Arts and Sports High School violin textbooks and to make contribution to more effective form and function violin lesseons. During the study, a texture based on descriptive methods have been used. Literature search, survey, proficiency test methods have been applied to collect data. Research sample is 168 violin students from Ankara, Balıkesir, İstanbul, İzmir, Muğla, Samsun, Malatya, Gaziantep, Mersin, Hatay and Diyarbakır GSSL 11th and 12th grade.Different geographical regions and schools which have graduated students and used violin textbooks have been considered while determining research sample randomly. There are total 36 questions ; 6 of them are personal ,19 of them are closed ended ,1 of them is open ended and related to specify the proficiency level of students about ornaments, 10 of them are understanding questions related to how they write abbreviations of ornaments. 19 closed ended questions related to specify the proficiency level of students about ornaments have 5 different choices like none(1), slightly(2), partially(3), widely(4), completely(5). For the statistical data analysis, SPSS 17.0 programme and descriptive statistical analysis (number, percent, mean, standart deviation) have been used. Parametrical tests; T- test, One-way Anova test have been used as hypothesis tests and correlation analysis has been done.The outcomes of the study have showed that in 11th grade textbook, tril, appogiatura (long appoggiatura-short appoggiatura), mordent (upper mordent-lower mordent), grupetto (turn) and ornament notes after beat have been used. The understanding level of students about how abbreviations of ornaments are read have been confirmed by understanding test and also the proficiency level of students about how ornaments are played have been confirmed by survey technique.In this study, it has been showed that most students don?t know the symbol and sign of ornaments writing and history, and they aren?t able to perform enough the symbol and sign of ornaments especially upper mordent, lower mordent and grupetto (turn) and also they have problems such as agility and contraction on left hand while performing.By the help of the results of findings, it has been emphasized that subjects related ornaments in GSSL violin lessons and teaching methods should be innovated and regulated. It has been adviced that studies about this subject should be done.
