Distortion in news photographs: A case study of the Russia-Ukraine War

This study examines news photographs containing disinformation that spread during the Russia-Ukraine war. In modern conflict periods, information warfare often uses manipulated or miscontextualized images to mislead the public and reinforce propaganda. Disinformation is defined as the deliberate spread of false information, typically used to support a specific agenda or propaganda goal. The potential for images to create a powerful impact makes them an effective tool for disinformation. During wartime, photographs not only document events but also have the power to shape particular narratives. Therefore, questioning the accuracy and context of war-related photos is critical for ensuring the public is correctly informed. The research addresses various examples of disinformation that have spread since February 24, 2022. Social media platforms are environments that enable the rapid dissemination of disinformation; thus, the study evaluates the effects of false information disseminated through platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. The study highlights the potential of disinformation to mislead the public and distort the realities of the war. The spread of misinformation affects not only the parties involved in the conflict but also undermines the credibility of the international community and the media. The conclusion drawn from this context is the necessity of strengthening media literacy and verification mechanisms to prevent the spread of disinformation. This research analyzes the impacts and dissemination methods of news photographs containing disinformation during the Russia-Ukraine war, discussing the necessary measures to ensure the public's access to accurate information. Emphasizing the importance of verification processes and media literacy is crucial to prevent the spread of such false information and mitigate its negative impacts on the media.
