The term 'ma'rûf' in hadith literature – the example of Sahih Bukhari

This study is a literature review on the term 'maruf'. Within this context, the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) in Sahih Bukhari were examined and the meanings of the term 'ma'rûf' were tried to be found out. In the first chapter, it was determined that al-Jammu-Sahih, which was renowned as Sahih Bukhari, was compiled for two important purposes. Moreover, in this part the conceptual frame of 'maruf' was determined. The usage of 'maruf' was investigated in the Qur'an, in the methods of hadith and jurisprudence. In the second chapter, also the main chapter, the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) in Sahih Bukhari were examined. The terms 'maruf' were detected in these hadiths. Moreover, the meanings of 'maruf' in the relevant hadiths were tried to be found out. The meanings of the term 'maruf' were tried to be found during pre-islamic age of ignorance period, after pre-islamic age of ignorance period and present day in the last chapter. The factors determining the term 'maruf' during pre-islamic and after pre-islamic age of ignorance period were figured out in this context. Correspondingly, the impacts of 'maruf' on societies' traditions and customs were tried to be found out.
