Evaluation of IVF results between mild and severe male factor infertility and unexplained infertility

Objective: In our study, it is aimed to compare the treatment outcomes of the patients undergoing IVF / ICSI due to azospermia, cryptozoospermia, severe oligoasthenoteratospermia or unexplained infertility. Materials and Methods: 372 patients undergoing ICSI and meeting study inclusion criteria who submitted to Akdeniz University School of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department IVF Center between March 2008 and December 2014 were enrolled in the study. The patients were evaluated by dividing into four groups. Group 1 consisted of 37 patients using TESE sperms due to azospermia, Group 2 consisted of 19 patients with azospermia in whom 1-2 sperms were seen on pellet after centrifugation, Group 3 consisted of 112 patients who had 5 million or less total progressive sperm count (TPSC) and Group 4 consisted of 204 patients undergoing ICSI for unexplained infertility. Results: Fertilisation rates were found as 60.3% in Group 1, 62.6% in Group 2, 66.3 in Group 3 and 69.5 in Group 4. Clinical pregnancy rates were 21.6%, 21.5%, 23.2%, 19.1% and ongoing pregnancy and live birth rates were 21.6%, 10.5%, 20.5%, 15.2% respectively. Conclusions: No statistically significant differences were found between the groups with regard to fertilisation rates, clinical pregnancy rates, ongoing and live birth rates among patients undergoing ICSI due to unexplained infertility, azoospermia, cryptozoospermia and severe oligoasthenoteratospermia. It has been concluded that at least one alive sperm is needed for each oocyte used for micro-injection, the main criteria for a succesfull ICSI.
