An investigation on the use of fly ash for the production lightweight building blocks with lime and cement

Turkey has 15 thermal power station establishments and 55 million ton lignite is burned everyyear in these stations. Annually 13 million tones of fly ash are to come off to the environmentas a waste material. Land filling of these wastes engage large areas and cause environmentalproblems. Only very small amount of fly ash is utilized in cement manufacture and used as afine aggregate addition in concrete production.Production of construction materials which have low cost, environmentally friendly andsufficient mechanical properties is the main aim of the researchers who makes materialresearches in this field.Fly ash will be used as a main raw material in experimental studies. Production of solid andvertically perforated light weight block samples will be produced. Optimal mix ratios ofcement-lime ratios will be determined as a binder.Different curing conditions will be applied for finding out the suitable curing conditions suchas water curing, and autoclaved. Curing conditions for the industrial applications will bedetermined. Technical properties of the samples were measured such as porosity, waterabsorption, compressive strength and freeze taw resistance.The main importance of this project is to recycling of waste fly ash as a main material. As aresult of this project, light weight construction blocks will be produced in economic way,deterioration of the agricultural soils is prevented, environmental problems of fly ash landfilling is minimized by recycling of the fly ash.Key Words : Fly ash, Cement, Lime, Lightweight block.
