Abstract (EN)
Artists utilize the concepts of memory and material in their works to document, reproduce, remember, and remind others of memories from the past. Every material, space, texture, and color used in art carries meaning shaped by the thoughts stored in our memory and subconscious. As individuals begin to grasp the concepts of self and essence, the advancement of reason and science has led to the emergence of new conceptual structures in material perception, directly influencing the course of art. In the context of Abstract Expressionism, how material is interpreted, the tendencies and directions within the movement, and the use of memory in painting are key elements that shape the aesthetic of material. Today, the concept of material is recognized as an independent form of expression and has been interpreted in various ways by many artists throughout history. Having broken away from traditional artistic understanding, material has become a unique tool of expression shaped by technical and intellectual developments. Artists have discovered new means of expression by utilizing the technological possibilities of their time. With modern art, the meaning, value, and function of art have been re-evaluated, paving the way for new aesthetic and conceptual approaches. In the first chapter, definitions of memory and material aesthetics are provided. The emotions and meanings assigned to objects by the artist are examined through the practices of artists who work extensively with material. The second chapter explores the historical development of Abstract Expressionism from the 1950s to the present, along with related movements and emerging tendencies shaped by the style. These findings are then expanded upon and explained in depth. The third chapter analyzes artists who incorporate the concept of memory into their work under the influence of Abstract Expressionism. The importance of material and the reflections of memory in art are emphasized. It has been observed that art has shifted from physical labor to intellectual production, and that any object can potentially serve as artistic material. The fourth chapter includes artworks produced in alignment with the thesis topic. The effects of Abstract Expressionism on these practical works are examined, along with the materials used and their interaction with the artistic expression. This study employs qualitative research methods, specifically the document analysis technique. The concepts of material aesthetics and memory in painting are addressed within the context of Abstract Expressionism, examining their historical development and impact on artworks. A qualitative content analysis method was used in analyzing the artworks. The selected artists' works were examined in terms of their visual characteristics, materials, textures, and techniques. The primary aim of this research is to reveal how aesthetic criteria influence the artist's choice of materials, thereby offering a new resource for future studies in this field.
