The phenomenon of recitation in the tafsir of Hakim Al-Jushami

Our master's thesis titled "The Phenomenon of Qiraat in Hakim al-Jushamī's Tafsir" consists of an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion. This study aims to examine in depth Hakim al-Jushamī's approach to the phenomenon of qiraat and his contributions to this field. In the first chapter, the commentator's life, scholarly personality, works, and sectarian identity are analyzed to reflect the political, social, and cultural context of his time. It was concluded that he adhered to a Mu'taziliteZaydī understanding. Additionally, al-Jushamī's scholarly background, his position in the field of tafsīr, and his method of exegesis are explored based on his tafsīr. The second chapter focuses on al-Jushamī's understanding of qiraat from various perspectives. This chapter, which includes multiple subheadings, is supported with rich examples without exceeding the scope of the thesis. In this context, his approach to sahih and shāz qira'ahs, as well as the qira'ahs of the Sahabah and Tabi'īn, is examined. The fundamental concepts he used in his qiraat analyses and the istishhad (evidences) he employed in his exegesis are emphasized. Furthermore, the relationships between dialect and qiraat, morphology and qiraat, and syntax and qiraat, along with their implications for meaning, are discussed in detail. Despite not being a qiraat scholar, al-Jushamī's deep engagement with qiraat issues and the reflection of this knowledge in his tafsīr indicate that his Mu'tazilite-Zaydī affiliation did not influence his qiraat analyses.
