Abstract (EN)

It has recently been a frequently applied approach in the emergency room to let family members of the patient to be in the same room during a resuscitation process or other medical intervention attempt. In this study we aimed to determine the attitudes of family members of patients that present to Gazi University Medical School Emergency Service, towards being next to their patients during a medical intervention. In our study we used the face to face interview technique and applied our questionnaire to 454 family members. Most of the family members that joined our study think that being in the same room during medical interventions is useful for themselves and their families. High percentage of family members think it is their right to witness a medical intervention that is done to their patients and patients? right to have the family members near bye during an intervention. In our study the groups that have the highest and lowest education levels were found to have the highest percentage to prefer to be next to their patients. The group with the high education level pointed out that they think their presence in the room would not affect the success of the job that is done. The higher the education levels the higher the rate of complaint to the liable doctor or the hospital if there is any problem. Younger ones were found to have a higher rate to say that they would use written complaints rather than the oral ones if they see something goes wrong. In our study the rate of women who preferred their family members to be in the room if an intervention was planned for them was higher than men. And the rate of women who thought that witnessing the intervention is their right and having family members near is the patients? right is higher compared to men. When the question `why would doctors not want to take you inside the room during an intervention?? is asked the most selected answer was `they want to work more comfortably.? For our country this family witnessed resuscitation and medical intervention approach could be used routinely, after more studies are conducted about the subject and the opinion of different groups are determined.
