The causes of having psychiatric hospitalization with the patients’ and their relatives viewpoints

Psychiatric hospitalization can have bad effects as much as good effects on the patient, the family and the society. Psychiatric hospitalization can break the environmental adaptation of the person, make financial difficulties on the people and the society. For that reason, defining the factors to cause psychiatric hospitalization has great importance. This study was done to define the causes of having psychiatric hospitalization with the patients? and their relatives? viewpoints. The research performed to identify the reasons of psychiatric hospitalization with view of the patients (450) who had psychiatric hospitalization at Psychiatric Ward of the Hospital of Akdeniz University, Psychiatric Ward of Asır Aksu State Hospital affiliated to Antalya State Hospital and Psychiatric Ward of Atatürk State Hospital and their relatives? (390) viewpoints. The datas obtained from this study were assessed by using independent samples-T test, pearson chi-square test and Fisher?s exact test at SPSS 13 (Statistical Package for Social Science) programme. At the result of this study, according to the patients and the relatives of them, the reasons of psychiatric hospitalization were determined as follows: ?to have anxiety, tension and psychological discomfort?, ?to deserve to get rid of his/her illness and to get treatment?, ?unable to follow the medical home-based treatment?, ?to be away from family, home and society?, ?not to be self-harmed and violent to others?, ?unable to sleep and eat? and ?mentally unbalanced behaviours?. In addition to this, ?Not to care by the family? was the reason of having psychiatric hospitalization which had been expressed by the families only and also some patients were not know why they have psychiatric hospitalization. Patients? sexuality, age, educational degree, number of children, profession and the environmental conditions, on the other hand the relatives of the patients? sexuality, marital status, profession, type of family and the environmental conditions were determined as the effective factors on the reasons of psychiatric hospitalization. It is thought that the reasons of psychiatric hospitalization which were acquired from this study can be abated by using adequate nursing interventions to sustain coping with the mechanisms of the patient and his/her family.
