Islamic calligraphy in the Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum collection in terms of calligraphy

Mevlevism started in Anatolia in the 13th century with the teachings of Jalāl al-DīnMuḥammadRūmī and was systematized by his son, Sultan Veled. Mevleviyeh has made many social, cultural, and artistic contributions to Turkish Islamic civilization aside from the Sufi lifestyle. Mevleviyeh is a Sufi doctrine focused on ecstasy and enthusiasm, and it highlights Islamic Sufism, music, and poetry. Furthermore, calligraphy, illumination, and painting were practiced and taught in Mevlevî lodges. Galata Mevlevî Lodge, Istanbul's second Mevlevî lodge, was not only a Sufi meeting hub, but also an institution that offered Islamic civilization with elegance in Beyoğlu, where non-Muslims and foreigners were dense in population, with the function of an academy of fine arts in addition to Islamıc Sufism and music, and many artists who belonged to and loved the Mevlevî lodge were trained. The present study, which includes a calligraphy evaluation of the calligraphy plates in the Galata Mevlevi Lodge collection, is divided into an introduction, two main chapters, and a conclusion. The first chapter, titled Mevleviyeh, Galata Mevlevi Lodge, and Calligraphy, discusses the history of Mevleviyeh and Galata Mevlevi Lodge. The relationship between Mevleviyeh and Calligraphy is discussed, and calligraphers who were trained in or belonged to the Galata Mevlevi Lodge and have calligraphy plates in the Mevlevi Lodge are mentioned. The second chapter offers an assessment of the calligraphy plates in the Galata Mevlevi Lodge calligraphy collection, which is the thesis's main focus. Manuscripts and muraqqas, which are sufficiently large to require their own study, are excluded from the scope.A total of 124 calligraphy plates in the Galata Mevlevi Lodge collection were grouped according to their forms and cataloged with information such as the type of writing, date, size, calligrapher, content, and text evaluation.
