Abstract (EN)
Mehmed Şevket Vahdetî Efendi, one of the prominent figures of Ottoman calligraphy, was a distinguished representative of the Mustafa Râkım school. During his short yet remarkable life of thirty-eight years, he produced original works that reflected his artistic success. Renowned for his accomplishments as a calligrapher, painter, and engraver, Vahdetî Efendi's works can be found in significant structures such as Hagia Sophia, Nuruosmaniye Mosque, Bursa Grand Mosque, and Nallı Mosque. Vahdetî Efendi was not only an artist but also a statesman who held positions within the Ottoman administration. In addition to his notable contributions to calligraphy, he also left a mark on the economic history of the Ottoman Empire. The design and engraving of the first banknotes issued by the Imperial Ottoman Bank (Bank-ı Osmanî-i Şahane) were entrusted to him, a clear testament to his artistic expertise and design skills. The uniqueness Vahdetî Efendi brought to the art of calligraphy forms the foundation of this study. By examining his extant works, this research seeks to emphasize his achievements and lasting impact in the field.
