Examination of Life and Lyrics Magazine of-Seyyîd Mîr Mehmed İzzet from Hazîne-i Enderûn-ı Hümâyûn (Treasury of the Enderun Academy (A special school) in the Ottoman Palace)

Those, who engaged in music during the Ottoman period, prepared the lyrics magazines in order to remember practically the modes and tempos kept in mind. They benefited from these magazines, in which they recorded modes, composers and tempos of each piece of music, when they performed a piece of music in a music environment. These lyrics magazines, survived until today, are the most important resources showing what kind of studies were done during the Ottoman period when the major developments took place in the field of music. The lyrics magazine which we study on was written for such a purpose and still conserved with the shelf-code 'T.Y. 3353' at the Rare Works of Art Library of Istanbul University. The lyrics are written on 50 folios in this lyrics magazine composed of 197 folios. There are lyrics of Şarkı, Hava, Türkmâni and Dâğî lyrics (music forms) in the magazine in which there are 191 lyrics in total. Sometimes, the names of composers are written over the lyrics. Since the date of the piece of music and the name of its compositor and also where s/he served appear on the adoption record available in the magazine, it has an important place among the other lyrics magazines. As a result of the researches we conducted, the compositor of the magazine worked both as a counting sergeant of the Sultan and also an instrument player as tanbûrî in the Dormitory of the Expeditionary Force in the time of Selim III. He was active in the field of music by working as a songster as well as working as janitor at the Treasury Force in the time of Sultan Mahmud II. VII It was observed during the examinations conducted by us on the lyrics available in the magazine that the modes and tempos of the lyrics of which the exercise system (known as meşk) were learned and taught changed and mixed over time and also some of them were forgotten. The tunesmiths and composers of some lyrics were mixed. It was tried to reveal their original states of the lyrics in which these differences were detected as a result of the examination conducted.
