Abstract (EN)

On August 22, 2020, a catastrophic flood event occurred in the Dereli district of Giresun province, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Upon examining the damages caused by the flood, it was determined that sediment movements played a critical role in aggravating the destruction. Using the HEC-RAS 6.3.1 flood modeling software, scenarios were compared in which the riverbed had no structures and was equipped with classical check dams, semi-open check dams, open check dams, and curved-footed type open check dams. The analysis focused on the changes in flow and sediment movements in the riverbed under unsteady flow conditions, as well as the resultant morphological alterations. The flood simulation revealed the changes in the riverbed morphology and flow velocities, leading to the identification of methods that could be employed for effective flood and sediment control.
