Early Republican poets' understanding of aesthetics within the scope of national and universal aspects of syllabic verse

Syllabic meter is a meter that has been continously used to the present since Divan-ı Lügati't Türk, whose first examples are seen in. Although it was disregarded by the intellectuals, with Arabic originated aruz meter gaining popularity as of 13th century, syllabic meter has survived through centuries among folk poets. While aruz meter had been superior to syllabic meter from 13th century to Tanzimat period, with modernization aruz meter as well as divan forms was laid down on table and its existance was brought into question. It is undeniable that the dissolving period of Ottoman Empire and winds of rising nationalist movement played an important role on these arguments. Because literary men who were against aruz meter emphasized the concept of nationality while proposing syllabic meter. They claimed that aruz was outsider and the national meter was syllabic meter. Unfortunately, limits were surpassed on this nationality emphasis and with syllabic meter being more widespread in the Republican era, this claim has undisputedly become a commonly accepted phenomenon. On this thesis syllabic meter will be approached in a comparative method with its uses in Turkish and world literatures and it is aimed at reflecting what the modern poets seeking change had bore in mind on the transition period from aruz to syllabic meter.
