Abstract (EN)

Hemorrhoid is a disease with high incidence, and disturbing symptoms. There are many surgical and botanical treatments for this condition. Additionally the patient's diet, lifestyle changes, and patient compliance are important factors for treatment support. However, the costly and disturbing nature of many treatment options often mediates the patient to postpone the treatment until aggressive intervention is required. Since ancient times, plants have been used for the treatment of diseases among the population. Herbal medicines and herbal teas are used in the treatment of diseases or as supportive treatment because there are less side effects to organism when compared to the synthetic drugs. In this review, preparations containing standardized plants extracts and/or drogs used in hemorrhoids complaints, that can be reached by the patients from the pharmacies in Turkey, was examined. The determined plants are searched according to the World Health Organization (WHO), European Scientific Phytotherapy Cooperative (ESCOP), European Medicines Institution (EMEA), German Commission E Monographs, pharmacopoeies and scientific publications. Their distribution, botanical properties, chemical composition, effects and uses, side effects, doses, drug interactions and information about pharmaceutical preparations are given.
