The reflection of nurse managers' paternalistic behaviour on their patient care responsibilities from the perspectives of clinical nurses

This study was carried out to identify, the reflection of nurse managers' paternalistic behaviour on their patient care responsibilities from the perspectives of clinical nurses. Data in this study were collected using paternalism scale and a questionnaire, which was designed to specify the demographic profiles of clinical nurses and the responsibilities of nurse managers about patient care. The study was conducted in Antalya at Akdeniz University Hospital, Antalya Education and Research Hospital and Antalya Atatürk State Hospital. The research group consisted of 609 clinical nurses working in these hospitals and accepted to participate in this investigation.The mean score of the paternalistic behaviour level of nurse managers? was 4.3±0.8. In this study 60.4% of the clinical nurse managers took place in high-paternalism group, 39.6% were in the low-paternalism group. It was found that nurse managers with high level of paternalistic attitude, directly involved in patient care-related initiatives.Clinical nurse managers worked at three institutions exhibited paternalistic attitudes and practices that reflect on the patient care was determined. This study provided with crucial findings about paternalistic approach of clinical nurse managers and their practices about care management.Clinical nurse managers need to change their behaviour in the direction of participatory and collaborative attitude that allows the development of institutional arrangements. Further research should be done to determine individual and institutional obstacles for nurses to decide autonomously and finding spesific solutions to these obstacles.Keywords: Charge nurse, nursing, care management, paternalism, paternalistic attitude
