Nurses? computer use cases and opinions of nurses about nursing information systems- a study is about Trabzon

Informatics? weight and effect in health sector has been increasing with acceleration. Therefore, the care workers who can use information technologies efficivetly have importance. It is seen that nurses? interests about the health informatics have been upsurging especially in the recent years. At the present day, ıt is needed the nurses who can decide evidence-based for the professional health care using healthcare informatics. It is required the inexpert nurses to have knowledge, skill and critical thinking ability and integrate informatics and nursing competences.This study has been planned for the purpose of the nurses? ideas about informatics and their proficiency in the use of computers. The study sample consists of 350 nurses working in provincial centre of Trabzon as per May 2010. The questionnaire used in this study was prepared by the researcher by reviewing the literature. In the study, it has been derived benefit from the questionnaire used by Zayim and friends for the purpose of specifying nurses? ideas about using computer in 2006. The questionnaire form is composed of two parts. In the first part, there are nine questions in the aggregate that specity the demographic characteristies and proficiency in the use of computers. In the second part, there are 30 questions that specify nurses? ideas concerning informatics, also. At the same time, 5 point likert scale has been as a basis in the study. The alpha relialibility coefficient is 0.78. SPSS 11.5 has been used in the analysis of data.The participant rate is as below: 0.9% head nurses, 10.6% assistant head nurses, 17.1% chief nurses, 71.4% department nurses and all of participants are women. The participant rate aged 30 and below is 20.9%, between aged 31 and 40 is 33.4%, between aged 41 and 50 is 44.6%, between aged 51 and 65 1.1%. The participants? working period rates: 20.9% 5 years and less, 32.9% between 6 and 10 years, 45.1% between 11 and 15 years, 1.1% between 16 and 20 years. The percentage of educational background: 21.4% high school, 23.1% associate degree, 55.4% undergraduate study. 66% of the participants have computers, but 34% of them do not. When considered their proficiency in the use of computers, it is seen that 22.3 of the participants do not use computer 0.3% is adverse user, 43.7% is average user, 32.9% is good user and 0.9% can use computer very well. Also, when considered the participants? computer usage time daily, the result is as below: 10.6% of them use computer less than an hour, 43.4% of them use between 1-3 hours, 23.7% use between 3-5 hours. 22.3% of the participants has one year and less experience, 56.3% has between 2-5 year experience, 10.9% has between 6-9 year experience. But 10.6% has not experience in any circumstances. Nurses? participation level in this survey about informatics varies from 1.66 to 4.16 points. The mean point of all the the statements is 3.39. Nurses participate in 17 statements, but they do not participate in 5 statements and they are undecided about 8 statements.Key Words: Nursing, Nursing Informatics, Computer, Using Computer
