Organizational Trust level in hospitals through nurses' evaluation

This descriptive study was conducted to determine the organizational trust level in hospitals through nurses' evaluation. The population of the study was comprised of a total of 1881 nurses who were working in public, private and university hospitals in Trabzon, and the sample consisted of 319 nurses selected by the stratified sampling method. The data were collected via the information form and organizational trust scale and analyzed through Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. According to the findings, the mean organizational trust scale score of the nurses, 81.2% of whom were female, 62.4% of whom were undergraduate graduates or postgraduate degree, 58% of whom were experienced in public hospitals and 40.1% of whom had less than 5 years of professional experience, was generally 4.08±0.66; their sub-dimensional mean score was 4.28±0.84 for trust in the manager, 3.33±1.12 for trust in the institution and 4.46±0.76 for trust in the colleagues. Moreover, the scores of public and university hospitals higher than the private hospital in the overall organizational trust scale, the scores of especially the university hospital higher than public and private hospitals, the scores of the public hospital higher than the private hospital in the dimension of trust in the manager, the scores of the university hospital higher than the private hospital in the dimension of trust in the institution, the scores of the public hospital higher than university and private hospitals and the scores of the university hospital higher than the private hospital in the dimension of trust in the colleagues were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The organizational trust scale scores of the nurses with less than 5 years of professional experience were higher than the scores of those with 6 years of experience or above, the scores of nurse managers were higher than the scores of the nurses and the scores of the nurses working in medical units were higher than the scores of the nurses working in other units such as operating rooms and intensive care units. These findings were also found statistically significant (p<0.05). Consequently, the nurses' trust in their organizations is at a moderate level in general. Besides, nurses with less experience, nurse managers and nurses working in medical units had higher trust in their institutions, and the nurses working in university hospital usually had higher trust in their managers and institutions, however, nurses working in public hospital had higher trust in their colleagues.
