Abstract (EN)

This research has been conducted on 49 nurses from Afyon Kocatepe University Research and Application Hospital. The aim of the research is to find out the knowledge level of the nurses on Total parenteral nutrition. Design of the research is a field research and the 49 nurses belong to General surgery intensive care, İnternal medicine intensive care, Anesthesia intensive care, Coronary intensive care and Cardiovascular surgical intensive care units.Scope of the research focuses on the nurses who are from General surgery intensive care, İnternal medicine intensive care, Anesthesia intensive care, Coronary intensive care and Cardiovascular surgical intensive care at Afyon Kocatepe University Research and Application Hospital between December 2009 ? January 2010.Data has been collected with a questionnaire of Total parenteral nutrition and nursing care observation form. Data has been collected by the researcher through face- to- face interview with nurses.Collected data has been analyzed with Statistics Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 15,0. Percentage exhibition has been employed for descriptive statistics. Open- ended questions have been grouped by ``know/ do not know.??Findings from the research shed light on the following; nurses are well equipped on diet support treatment and knowledge on Total parenteral nutrition. However, they lack knowledge on the complications related to total parenteral nutrition and required daily calorie intake for adults. As a result, we have found that in- house training has increased their knowledge and applicability levels. However, for matters which they lack knowledge, efficient in- house training should be employed and training should be in the form of continuing education.Key words: Total parenteral nutrition and nursing care, Complications of Total parenteral nutrition
