The investigation of corelations between loneliness and rejection sensitivities and social anxiety among nursing students

This study was conducted in order to examine the relationship between the university students' loneliness, rejection sensivities and social anxiety levels. The universe of this study consisted of 352 nursing department students attending Adnan Menderes University School of Health in 2012-2013 academic year. Census sampling method was used in the survey and the sample consisted of 215 students. The data of this study was collected by using Personal Information Form, which investigated descriptive characteristics of students and independent variables of the study, UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA), Rejection Sensivity Scale (RSS), Social Anxiety Scale (SAS). Statistical data was analyzed by using the computer package program called SPSS 15.00. In addition to descriptive statistical methods such as means and standart deviation, also T Test, Mann Whitney U Test, Krusskal Wallis Test, OneWay Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson Moment Correlation were used for the data analysis. 74.1% of students who participated in the study were female, 25.9% of students were male and the mean age was 20.13±1.69. As a result, significant relationship was found out among loneliness level, rejection sensivities level and social anxiety level. Sociodemographic variables affected rejection sensitivity, social anxiety and the loneliness levels. By determining loneliness, rejection senstivity and social anxiety levels of the students, in order to take support, directing to the relevant departments are recommended for the the students in need and organizing courses for the students' personal development and training programs are recommended.
