Evaluation of nursing students' knowledge, behaviors, and willingness to work in mass casualty incidents

This study aims to evaluate nursing students' knowledge levels, behavioral tendencies, and willingness to participate voluntarily in mass casualty incidents (MCIs). This descriptive and comparative study was conducted with 156 nursing students from 1st to 4th year. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that included a 5-point Likert scale to assess students' knowledge, potential behaviors, and willingness to volunteer in MCIs. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. As students' academic level increased, their knowledge regarding mass casualty incidents and willingness to engage voluntarily showed a statistically significant improvement (p<0.05). Specifically, 3rd and 4th year students exhibited more positive attitudes and greater preparedness compared to 1st and 2nd year students. A positive correlation was found between students' knowledge levels and their willingness to participate in emergency response efforts. To ensure nursing students are adequately prepared for mass casualty incidents, it is recommended to introduce disaster nursing content earlier in the curriculum, supported by practical training. Furthermore, promoting a culture of volunteerism and encouraging participation in disaster drills can enhance students' readiness and engagement in real-life emergency situations.
