Comparison of the theoretical and real performance of a hydroelectric power plant

The usage of existing hydraulic power of hydroelectric power plants (HPP), which is a local, renewable resource and have a great importance for the energy supply security of our country, appropriately and efficiently is very important. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize energy losses, replace existing equipment with more efficient equipment and eliminate existing production constraints. The performance of the HPPs, many of which have been in operation for more than 30 years, should be determined and their efficiency should be increased with the improvements to be made. The importance of these matters, due to Turkey's use a large portion of the existing hydraulic potential, is increasing day by day. Within the scope of this thesis, efficiency performance test was performed by using acoustic flow meter system of Gökçekaya Hydroelectric Power Plant which was commissioned in 1973 on Sakarya River, and the current efficiency of the power plant and Francis type turbine was determined by comparing with theoretical calculations. Efficiency performance tests of the power plant were performed at certain power, head and adjustment wicket gate opening. It is shown from the study that theoretical and real test results were found to be compatible and recommendations were given for improvements to the power plant.
