Occupational health and safety problems and solution suggestions in hydroelectric powerplants

Nowadays, hydroelectric powerplants, which are some of the renewable energy facilities, gain great importance in the energy sector, and the number of established facilities and employees in this sector increase day by day with the rising demand for energy in the World. In this thesis study, three main topics were emphasized. First of all, general concepts which is related to electricity, working with electricity and occupational health and safety are given. Afterwards, detailed informations about the hydroelectric power plants, which are the subject of the study, and the works carried out within the scope of occupational health and safety in these facilities are mentioned. Hydroelectric powerplants constitute an important share in electricity production in our country. Therefore, a hydroelectric power plant located in the Yeşilırmak Basin was determined in the thesis study, and a field study was carried out. In this facility, a risk assessment was made using the 5x5 L type matrix method, 149 risks were identified and solution suggestions were presented. It has been understood once again how dangerous the work done in hydroelectric powerplants is. At the same time, it is aimed to present research of risk assessment and solution proposals in our study as a guide document to people who work in this sector.
