Examination of the 8th grade students' academical success and their behaviours for the structure and properties of matter as writing story

In this study, the aim is to examine the effects of writing stories, one of the learning activities for 8th grade students academical success and attitude. In accordance with this purpose, mixed pattern method was used with the help of both qualitive data and quantitive data. As a working group, 45 8th grade students in 2014-2015 educational year in Giresun city were chosen. In the quantitive part of the research, two studies were done for collecting data. In the first study, the success test prepared by researcher and created with the questions asked in previous years, was done as pre-test and post-test by experiment and control groups. In the time of the unit occured by 5 subjects, only experiment group is wanted to write a story about each subject at the end of the each subject. As in the second study, science attitude scale was done for both experiment and control groups at the beginning of the unit and end of the unit. The datas were analysed thanks to SPSS program. Multichoice questions and open-ended questions were criticized according to the results of both pre-test and Mann-Whitney U-Test. According to this result, any significant differences weren't found between the answers given to the questions. Although there is no any difference in multichoice questions between the groups according to the analyse results of pre-test Mann-Whitney U-Test, there is a significant difference in open ended questions according to the analyse results of post-test Mann-Whitney U-Test. Also, according to the results of pre-attitude and post-attitude scales, there is no difference between the groups. In the quantitive part of the research, open-ended survey form, prepaired by researcher for understanding the idea of the students about writing story activity, is applied for only experiment group and the data is evaluated with the help of content analysis method. According to the results, writing story helps students to understand the subject, develop the ability to comment and rise the wish of learning.
