The effect of treatment on bnp levels in patients with hyperthyroidism

SUMMARYTHE EFFECT OF TREATMENT ON BNP LEVELS İN PATİENTS WİTHHYPERTHYROİDİSMIntroduction and aim: It has been shown that hyperthyroidism inducesdifferent findings and symptoms by affecting various organs and systems. Alsoincreased BNP levels have been detected in hyperthyroidism in accordance with thyroidhormone levels. Considering that thyroid hormones can also affect the levels of BNP,independent of cardiac dysfunctions, we aimed to evaluate the BNP levels in patientswith hyperthyroidism who do not suffer any cardiac problems or systemic diseases andeffect of the treatment on the BNP levels as well.Materials and Methods: 29 hyperthyroid patients and 30 healthy subjectsparticipated into the study. The patients were checked for their total T3, total T4, freeT3, free T4, TSH, anti TPOAb, Anti TgAb, and BNP levels before and after treatmentperiod.Results: BNP levels of hyperthyroid patients before treatment were foundsignificantly higher compared to control group (P<0.05). Also a significant correlationwas observed between the BNP levels of the patients before the treatment and afterbeing euthyroid (P<0.05). A positive correlation was also observed between TT3 andAnti TPOAb, and BNP levels (P<0.05). No significant correlation was detected betweenBNP and TSH before and after treatment (P>0.05). Moreover a positive correlation wasfound among patients for Anti TgAb, ST3, ST4 and TT4 before the treatment (P<0.05),while no correlation was detected after treatment (P>0.05).Conclusion: BNP levels were higher in hyperthyroid patients compared those ofcontrols. Antithyroid treatment was found to decrease BNP level significantly. Since thepatients are selected from subjects with out cardiac problems and systemic diseases, ourfinding suggest that the decrease in the BNP levels were caused by the decrease in thelevels of thyroid hormones rather than improvement in cardiac functions. This studysuggests that thyroid hormone level should be taken into consideration while evaluatingthe level of BNP.Key word: Hyperthyroid, BNP51
