Oxidative stress parameters and adenosine deaminase activity in patents with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism

Abstract (EN)
Hyperthyroidism is a clinical condition that characterized by increased basal metabolismas a result of excessive production of thyroid hormones in tissues.On the other hand hypothyroidism is characterized by decreased metabolism resultingfrom insufficient production or ineffectiveness of thyroid hormones.The aim of this study was to examine oxidative stress parameters and adenosinedeaminaz activity in patient with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. In this purpose,subjects were chosen for the study included 60 individuals (20 patents with hyperthyroidism,20 patents with hypothyroidism, and 20 healthy subjects as the control group) who do notsmoke or drink alcohol and have not taken and medication at least for 20 days in order tomeasure the nitrit + nitrat levels as an indicator of nitric oxide, malondialdehide as a markerof lipid peroxidation end product, adenosine deaminase as a purin catobolyzing enzym, andglutathione levels as an antioxidant agent in plasma.Plasma NO levels were observed to have increased in patents with hyperthyroidism andhypothyroidism 246 % and 96 % respectively compared to the control group. Statisticallysignificant difference was found in comparison between groups.Plasma MDA levels were observed to have increased in patents with hyperthyroidismand hypothyroidism 639 % and 221 % respectively compared to the control group. Statisticalysignificant difference was found in comparison between the groups. While no significantdifference was observed in NO and MDA levels in terms of gender variable, a positive lowcorrelation was observed in terms of age.Plasma ADA levels were observed to have increased in patents with hyperthyroidism by67 % and decreased in patents with hypothyroidism 4 % compared to the control group.Differences were found statistically significant. While no significant difference was observedin terms of gender variable, a negative correlation was observed in terms of age.Plasma GSH activity was decreased in patents with hyperthyroidism andhypothyroidism 73 % and 46 % respectively, compared to the control group. A statisticallysignificant difference was found between the groups. While no significant difference wasobserved in terms of gender variable, a negative correlation was observed in terms of age.While no significant correlation was found between the groups and in terms of age, thecorrelation with age was found significant for TSH, T3, T4, ST4 and ST3. A positive and highcorrelation was found between MDA and NO levels as a result of correlation analysis ofgroups with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and control group.Results of this study will shed a light to the future studies as it is not yet proved fullywhether oxidative stress, as an actor in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases, is developedas a result or reason of thyroid diseases. Moreover the significant change in the adenosinedeaminase activity indicates that this enzyme can be used as an indicator, in addition tothyroid parameters, in tracing the prognosis and treatment of the disease with the help offuture studies. In addition to the findings from this study, there is a need for future studies inwhich additional antioxidant agents are used in the treatment of oxidative stress increasing inthe active stage of the thyroid diseases.Key words: Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Oxidative Stress, ADA Activity
