A comparative philological analysis of the Akkadian and Hittite Versions of the Akkadian-Hittite Bilingual Annals (CTH 4) of Hittite King Hattušili I

In this study, a comparative philological analysis of Akkadian and Hittite versions of the Akkadian-Hittite Bilingual Annals of the Hittite King Hattušili I (CTH 4), was made. As the bilingualism of the CTH 4 text constitutes the main subject of the study, firstly the concepts of bilingualism and multilingualism and the emergence and development processes of these concepts in the Ancient Near East have been briefly examined. In addition, issues such as the formation process of Hittite archives and the various types and formats of bilingual and multilingual texts seen in these archives are also surveyed. Thus, it is aimed to better understand the importance of CTH 4 among other bilingual and multilingual texts in Hittite archives. At the final phase of the study, updated transliterations and Turkish translations of the Akkadian and Hittite versions of the CTH 4 have been made, and the text philologically analyzed by comparing its two different versions to each other from various aspects. These aspects include the historical connection of the copies in Akkadian and Hittite, contextual and stylistic resemblances and diversions between the two versions and the questions like which one of the two versions is closer to the original text. In addition, some theories put forward in earlier studies on the text and some unanswered questions were re-evaluated.
