Sociological analysis of the orientalist overview against Turkey in Hollywood cinema

Orientalism is a kind of alienation forms that the Western Society's system of thought. It emphasizes the underdevelopment of Eastern. It also has an institutionalized structure with a systematic thought. To build the West's own existence, it has an ethicalbased, othering discourse that defines religion, language, and ethnicity as outlying societies. The cinema, accepted as the seventh art, is one of the tools by which this discourse is used. Cinema shapes people's view of the world, changing the perceptions of viewers and influencing their thinking mechanisms. It is also used as an effective art to create the perception of us and other that orientalism uses against Eastern societies. Especially Hollywood cinema plays an important role in the transfer of orientalist representations. This study aims to contribute to the sociology literature by examining the orientalist perspective of Turkey and Turks in Hollywood films taken in Turkey. In this context, the Taken-2 Istanbul, Midnight Express, Arabian Lawrence, Prison Heat and Passport to Terror that shot the films of Hollywood cinema, were discussed in study. Orientalist ideologies presented in the films have been tried to be put forward and Turkey has been examined as a fictional Eastern image created in Hollywood cinema.
