Homer and his effects on the Ancient Greek pholosophy

Homer is a name in the history of philosophy, which is only known and taught only as a poet. However Homer has a great effect on the ancient greek world. Both Homeric poems and the mythological understanding of the world effected on philosophy. In that respect the relationship between both "poetry and philosophy" and "mythology and philosophy" are worth to think about. In the thesis which is named as "Homer and his effects on the ancient greek philosophy"; firstly an inquiry was holded about Homer. The sources about Homer are searched and a chapter which provides understanding Homer is composed. It is attempted to deal with almost every subject about Homer in the chapter named The Homeric Problem; then main Works of Homer, Iliad and Odysseus is noticed and lastly in the chapter named Homeric Interpretations, it is attempted to point out how Homer was commented in the ancient times. After this introduction about Homer, in the second episode the relationship between Homer and philosophers was hold. The sources about Homer's effect on his successors or the ideas of them about Homer were searched and it was given many information. In that context, among the ancient philosophers, the pre-Socratics and the two big names Plato and Aristotle were hold separately. All dialogues of Plato are scanned and investigated, all ideas about Homer written in the dialogues are argued out. Finally in the last episode in which I tried to compare mythology and philosophy, a progress from "gods" to "the god" was attempted to indicate via ancient philosophers. The gods of mythology is seem to convert to "the God" of philosophy. In the chapter of Plato, it is hold separately the understanding of god in Plato. Lastly the question of how we can understand mythology in the context of science and philosophy was tried to answered. In that manner it was investigated and criticized the accumulation up to date about the issue. In the conclusion episode, this thesis' insistence of that mythology and poetry have an determinative effect on the philosophy was held and attempted to defend by the arguments extracted from the thesis.
